The Great Sandy National Park ( also known as Cooloola National Park) incorporates and preserves the largest tract of natural land in Queenslands southern coast and the largest intact sand dune system in the world (around Teewah beach). The National Park is a vast wilderness area covering 54,000 hectares, from Lake Cootharaba north up to Rainbow Beach.
There are glorious beaches, sparkling lakes, wildflowers, mangrove lined waterways, forests, heath land and the peaceful Noosa River
The Beach Access Permits now apply. you can purchase permits from the Info center just before the ferry Tewantin side also at The Beach Front Caravan Park at the 3rd cutting or online at www.derm.qld.gov.au All the information you need to know is on the web site
Teewah Beach is just north of Noosa, however, YOU WILL NEED A 4WD or AWD for driving on the beach.
The Parks famous coloured sands have as many as 72 different colours, which have been produced by a combination of iron oxide and leached vegetable dyes. It is likely that the sands have been forming since the last ice age.
More poetically, an aboriginal legend tells of a spirit which took the form of a rainbow entering into a fight over a young woman. The spirit fell onto the cliffs infusing the sands with the polychromatic splendor. It is just another reason to visit and explore this stunning region……………HAVE FUN!
The climate of the Noosa area is classified as sub tropical with an average of seven hours of sunshine per day. The average summer temperature range from 21C to 28C. Winters are mild and sunny with averages from 11C to 22C. Spring and Autumn are very comfortable with averages around 25C. The water temperature varies 19C to 26C.
